Conformance Status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

There are three levels of conformance within the four success criteria principles Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust:

Level A,

Level AA, and

Level AAA.

The standard for web accessibility globally is WCAG 2.1 Level A & AA.

The Azure Palm Hot Springs website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level A & AA.

  • All images have Alt-text provisions.
  • The user can zoom in on the website content up to 500% without screen visibility loss.
  • Assistive technology users will be able to understand and access links, lists and forms, although some still require optimization (see below).
  • The heading structure is optimized for use with assistive technology.
  • Contrast ratios for text and non-text elements are accessible.
  • Keyboard-only navigation with the correct focus order is enabled.

The Azure Palm website platform is currently non-conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level A & AA with the following success criteria. The violations listed below have been found during accessibility testing of the website on a Google Chrome browser and the use of a JAWS screen reader. These will be addressed in Remediation Phases 2 and 3 in accordance with their impact level:

Perceivable Success Criteria Issues

  • 3.1 Info & Relationships – Data table markups are missing information for assistive technology users.
Affected users: visual – screen readers.
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2
  • 3.2 Logical Reading Order – Hidden content is read out by the screen reader.
Affected users: visual – screen readers.
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2
  • 3.5 Identify Input Purpose – Autocomplete is missing from input fields
Affected users: cognitive – people with cognitive disabilities
Impact: Moderate – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 3
  • 1.4.12 Text Spacing – On applying text spacing for easier reading there is vertical text cut off.
Affected users: visual & cognitive – low vision, cognitive conditions.
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2

Operable Success Criteria Issues

  • 2.4.7 Focus Visible – The focus indicator is not visible for interactive elements.
Affected users: visual & cognitive – screen readers, motor impaired, cognitively impaired
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2

Understandable Success Criteria Issues

  • 2.2 On Input – A link opens in a new tab without prior warning. This can be confusing for assistive technology and visually and cognitively impaired users.
Affected users: visual & cognitive – screen readers, low vision, and cognitive disabilities
Impact: Moderate – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 3
  • 3.3.3 Error Suggestion – error messages are not unique to the element referred to in the message.
Affected users: visual & cognitive – screen readers, low vision, and cognitive disabilities
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2

Robust Success Criteria Issues

  • 1.1 Parsing – There is a duplicate ID for an element which may prevent assistive technology from interacting properly with the content element.
Affected users: visual, physical, cognitive – Any user agents or assistive technology users.
Impact: Modest – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 3
  • 1.2 Name, Role, Value – names, text, roles, and states are missing for some user interface components, such as links, toggles, buttons and iframes and therefore cannot be determined by assistive technology.
Affected users: visual – screen readers.
Impact: Serious – to be addressed in Remediation Phase 2

Compatibility with Browsers and Assistive Technology

The Azure Palm Hot Springs website platform was tested for accessibility using the Google Chrome browser and JAWS screen reader.

Before completion of Remediation Phase 2 & 3, the web platform is not fully compatible with a JAWS screen reader. It is therefore not expected to be fully compatible with assistive technology on recent versions of operating systems (desktop and mobile) mac OS X, Microsoft Windows & Android, and Apple iOS.

The web platform is expected to be compatible with the following after completion of Remediation Phases 2 & 3:

The use of up-to-date versions of JAWS screen readers and browser versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, IE 11 and with assistive technology on recent versions of operating systems (desktop and mobile) mac OS X, Microsoft Windows & Android, and Apple iOS.

The Azure Palm website platform cannot be expected to be not compatible with:

  • Any browsers that are older than 3 major versions or assistive technology and mobile operating systems that are older than 5 years.

Known Limitations for the Azure Palm Hot Springs Website Platform

The Azure Palm Hot Springs website platform was intended to be designed and developed in accordance with the four WCAG principles – perceivable, operable, understandable, robust – and with a broad spectrum of physical, cognitive, and situational limitations in mind. Some violations were discovered during a WCAG conformance and usability assessment. These violations are being addressed in a phased process during 2023 as outlined above.

Azure Palm Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa Oasis, LLC would make any user affected by different access requirements aware of the following known limitations on individual web pages. Assistive technology users in particular would need assistance with the use of the following pages and actions on the platform:

  • Home Page – hidden elements are read out by the screen reader in the main logo. The form in the footer does not allow autocomplete and its error messages are not specifying the error type. The text in the 1st part of the slider for “Explore the Resort” is cut-off when text spacing is applied and the arrow buttons of the slider are not named for screen readers. The focus indicator is not clearly visible for interactive elements when using the tab key, e.g., “book now”. Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers. The iframe text description for Google maps is missing.
  • Guest Rooms – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers.
  • Overnight Packages – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers.
  • Day Spa – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers.
  • Spa Menu – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers.
  • Café – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers.
  • Wellness Retreats – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers. Screen readers cannot identify the text in the data table in the correct table order. This can lead to confusion. For screen reader users, the button role is missing for the toggles in the “Click any question below for answers” section and the expand/collapse state is missing for the toggles.
  • Press – Images with embedded links are missing accessible link text for screen readers. The links at the end of each paragraph are opening in a new window, but the screen reader user is not aware of it, e.g., the “www.brides.com” link.

Assessment Approach

Access Design Studio assessed the accessibility of the Azure Palm Hot Springs website platform in March 2023 by using the following approaches:

  • Manual assessments using visual testing.
  • JAWS screen reader testing by a blind auditor.

A full website accessibility audit report has been submitted to Maria Lease on the March 13, 2023, listing WCAG 2.1 Level A & AA violations, best practice failures and recommended remediation solutions.

The Remediation work for Phase 1, 2 & 3 is undertaken by Access Design Studio in accordance with the schedule listed above.
